Senegal cement their status as Egypt’s nemesis; AFCON 2025 adds another chapter
The Pharaohs, the most successful nation in Africa Cup of Nations history, once again suffered a decisive blow at the hands of the Lions of Teranga, as Senegal continue to establish a painful pattern in African football.
Senegal and Sadio Mané once again crushed the title hopes of Egypt and Mohamed Salah, this time in AFCON 2025. The latest defeat raises serious concerns for the Pharaohs, as it is no longer an isolated incident but rather the continuation of a growing Senegalese dominance in decisive encounters.
Senegal’s first AFCON title came at Egypt’s expense in 2021
Egypt, winners of seven AFCON titles, could have added more silverware if history had unfolded differently in 2021, when Senegal lifted their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations trophy after defeating Egypt on penalties.
The Lions of Teranga had previously lost two AFCON finals, and even Sadio Mané missed a penalty during regulation time. Still, justice prevailed for Senegal’s talisman, as the former Liverpool star converted the decisive spot-kick to seal a 4–2 shootout victory and make history.

Senegal struck again against Egypt on the road to Qatar 2022
Just months later, Mané and Senegal once again stood in the way of Egypt and Salah, this time in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
After a tense two-legged tie, the series went to penalties once more, where Senegal again emerged victorious, denying Egypt a place at the Qatar 2022 World Cup and deepening the rivalry’s imbalance.
Another decisive blow in AFCON 2025
Contrary to expectations of revenge, Egypt approached the match cautiously, more focused on their opponent than on imposing their own game — a strategy that ultimately led to failure.
Once again, Sadio Mané delivered the decisive moment, scoring the goal that sent Senegal into the AFCON 2025 Final, where they will face Nigeria or Morocco.
