Motsepe Defends CAF Impartiality Amid Senegal AFCON Controversy
The controversy is far from over, and now Africa’s top football authority has delivered a strong message that could shape what comes next.
CAF responds amid growing controversy
The president of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, stepped forward to address the storm surrounding the decision to strip the Africa Cup of Nations title from the Senegal national team. Speaking in Dakar, Motsepe strongly defended the organization’s “impartiality” in a case that has shaken African football.
He emphasized that no nation or federation would receive preferential treatment within CAF, directly responding to the criticism that followed the ruling. Motsepe also reaffirmed the organization’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and its commitment to transparency and respect for refereeing decisions.
CAS will have the final say
Amid the ongoing dispute, the case has been taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which will ultimately decide the outcome of one of the most controversial episodes in recent tournament history. Motsepe made it clear that CAF will respect whatever verdict is delivered.
At the same time, he stressed the importance of focusing on the future of African football, while acknowledging that CAF is already working to strengthen its regulations to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
The moment that sparked chaos
The controversy stems from the final played in Rabat, where Senegal had originally secured a 1-0 extra-time victory over the Morocco national team. However, a dramatic sequence of events changed everything.
A late penalty awarded to Morocco triggered protests from Senegal’s players, who briefly left the pitch in response. That action proved decisive, as CAF applied its regulations and awarded Morocco a 3-0 administrative victory—sparking outrage and an immediate appeal from the Senegalese federation.
A decision that could reshape the future
Now, all eyes are on the CAS ruling, but the impact of this case is already being felt. Beyond determining a champion, the controversy has placed CAF’s credibility and governance under intense scrutiny.
African football awaits a final decision that could not only resolve the dispute, but also set a crucial precedent for the future of the competition and the continent’s football administration.
