The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has responded to the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award them the AFCON 2025 title, following a ruling that declared Senegal to have forfeited the final.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has responded to the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to award them the AFCON 2025 title, following a ruling that declared Senegal to have forfeited the final.
CAF’s Appeals Committee announced that Senegal, who had originally won the match 1-0 in extra time, would be considered to have lost, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory and the championship.
In its statement, the Moroccan federation said it “takes note” of the decision, emphasizing that its appeal was not intended to question the performance of the teams but to ensure the proper application of the competition’s regulations.
Federation’s official stance
The federation stressed that its position was solely based on respecting the rules. “Our approach has never been to question the sporting performance of the participating teams,” the statement read.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to respecting regulations, ensuring transparency in competitions and maintaining stability within African football.
Additionally, the federation congratulated all participating nations for their involvement in the tournament and highlighted the significance of the AFCON for the continent.
The statement concluded by announcing that the federation will hold a meeting to determine its official response following CAF’s ruling.
