Luca Zidane Makes History With the Algerian National Team
The Algerian goalkeeper breaks records and manages to keep a clean sheet at AFCON 2026.
Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who plays for Granada CF, is making history in this AFCON with his father Zinedine Zidane's country of origin.
Zidane has gone from being called up a couple of months ago for the World Cup qualifiers to becoming one of the icons of this AFCON 2026 and the Algerian national team, after keeping clean sheets and breaking records.
How did it all begin?
Luca Zidane played for the French national team in competitions from the U-16 to U-20 categories, then chose to play in the country of origin of his father, Zinedine Zidane, eager to participate in this edition of the 2026 African Cup of Nations.

The Algerian national team's number 23 has managed to keep three clean sheets during the AFCON matches, including the crucial game against the Democratic Republic of Congo, guarding the goal until extra time when Algeria managed to score and take the victory, thus advancing to the next round.

He broke the record
Mohamed Haniched was an Algerian goalkeeper who managed to keep a clean sheet in the first two matches of the 1996 AFCON, a record that was surpassed by the new Algerian national team goalkeeper during this edition of the 2026 AFCON, achieving three clean sheets so far in the tournament.
What's to come?
Algeria will face Nigeria in the quarterfinals on January 10 at the Marrakech Stadium. Luca Zidane will seek to keep a clean sheet to give his team the chance to advance to the semifinals and set a higher bar for the record he has just broken.
