Group B Clash Opens Matchday 2

Match Day 2 in AFCON 2025 kicks off with Angola and Zimbabwe each looking to pick up a vital first win.

Friday’s Group B match between Angola and Zimbabwe is the first game in the second round of the frenetically paced 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. It is a clash between two teams that were so close in the first round to pulling off remarkable results, and yet so far in the end.

Both teams were handed tough opening games in the 2025 AFCON, but Angola and Zimbabwe both put up more than credible displays in their respective performances, to suggest that the tournament is not over for either.

Angola put up a fight against South Africa in the first match, holding a tournament powerhouse to a 1-1 draw before a late moment of Premier League finesse from Burnley’s Lyle Foster gave Bafana Bafana the eventual victory. The challengers certainly put the boot in during in the game, committing 23 fouls against South Africa, the most in a single AFCON game since at least 2010.

Zimbabwe’s Near Upset and AFCON Reality

Zimbabwe almost pulled off the result of the tournament so far by holding a 1-1 scoreline against Egypt, before Mohamed Salah grabbed an injury-time winner. Both games showed a common theme in AFCON 2025 in all the squads are more than competitive with each other, but it’s the teams that have those top-tier players up front that prevail.
