Is the Nigeria National Team Refusing to Play in the AFCON 2025 Quarter-finals? This Is What the Reports Say
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) Quarter-finals are about to kick off, but it was recently reported that Nigeria national football team players threatened to boycott training and their trip to Marrakech due to unpaid bonuses.
Is Algeria at risk against Nigeria in AFCON 2025?
According to ESPN, the Nigeria players informed team officials on Tuesday night that they would neither train nor board the flight to Marrakech until they received payments for their first four AFCON 2025 matches: group stage victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, plus their Round of 16 win against Mozambique.

Later, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Ibrahim Musa Gusau told ESPN that the issue had been resolved. “The players were shown documents proving their AFCON 2025 bonus payments had been processed, and they trained today, so there is no problem,” he said.
An official from Nigeria’s National Sports Commission, which oversees the NFF, confirmed that the player payments had been processed through the Central Bank of Nigeria and would be available in the players’ bank accounts within seven days.
Additionally, the promised AFCON 2025 bonus payments have already been made: $5,000 per goal during the group stage and $10,000 per goal in the knockout rounds, funded by friends of the Sports Ministry, totaling $80,000.
With these payments resolved, Nigeria national team will face Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarter-final without any issues, in a matchup expected to be one of the highlights of AFCON 2025.
