Legend vs. newcomers go head-to-head in an AFCON Last 16 clash between Nigeria and Mozambique

Monday’s AFCON 2025 Last 16 clash between Nigeria and Mozambique pits a team that is now competing in the knockout stages of the tournament for the 18th occasion, against visitors that have reached the business end of the tournament for the very first time. It’s been there, done that, bought the t-shirt versus those taking selfies. 

The Super Eagles will go into Monday’s tie live on beIN SPORTS as the overwhelming favorites. Nigeria was one of only two teams to win all three group games and did it with some style by scoring eight goals, the team’s highest ever tally in the AFCON group stages.

As an extra flex, Nigeria boasted six different goal scorers. It is this fierce competition for places that sees coach Eric Chelle focusing more on what happens away from the limelight of the matches in his squad. “Only players who have good trainings session will have the chance to play,” said Chelle ahead of the Mozambique match, where a victory could see a quarterfinal meeting against Algeria.

Mozambique’s AFCON 2025 so far has been full of firsts. A group stage win over Gabon was the nation’s first ever victory in 18 attempts in the AFCON finals. Those three points were enough to put the Mambas in the knockouts for the first ever time. Form and history suggest that the team’s stay in AFCON may not last too much longer.
