Group F set for a spectacular finale as Mozambique and Cameroon battle for standings supremacy

 In terms of in-match calculations, the Group F finale is going to be one of the more complicated ones for match commentators to work out in real time.

Ivory Coast are currently at the top of the standings with four points, followed by Cameroon also on four and Mozambique who have three. All three teams will advance to the Last 16, but the order will be decided by the results of games to be played simultaneously live on beIN SPORTS on Wednesday, and those of the previous match days.

That’s because of the AFCON rule that head-to-head records count ahead of goal difference for teams that share points tallies.

Cameroon defeated Gabon in the first group match and then played out an entertaining but hard fought 1-1 draw with Ivory Coast on Sunday. The final part of the mission is on Wednesday with Cameroon needing to better Ivory Coast’s result to finish top of the standings. Both sides have identical records so far, and it is only Ivory Coast’s disciplinary record that sees the side at the top.

Cameroon coach, David Pagou, has quite wisely said that he will avoid working out all these calculations in real time. “We are sharp focused,” said Pagou, “we are speaking about the round of 16, we are just focusing on the next match against Mozambique.”

The Mozambique players are still excited to be on the brink of the Last 16 having won their first-ever AFCON match with a 3–2 victory over Gabon in their previous game.

Sunderland’s Reinildo summed up the feeling in the Mozambique camp – “it’s an incredible moment, not just for players, but for our country because we fought for many, many years to catch this first win.”
