Egypt vs Zimbabwe: AFCON 2025 Opener at Grand Stade d’Agadir

Record-holders Egypt begin their quest for an eighth TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title when they face Zimbabwe in Agadir on Monday. 

The Pharaohs, led by legendary coach Hossam Hassan, a three-time AFCON winner as a player, are among the favorites in AFCON 2025. Egypt last lifted the trophy in 2010 and have faced several near-misses since then. However, with another golden generation of talent, the Pharaohs believe this could be the year to reclaim the crown.

Captain and star player Mohamed Salah, two-time CAF African Player of the Year, is expected to spearhead Egypt’s campaign. Despite a challenging few weeks with Liverpool FC, Hassan says the AFCON will be the perfect platform for Salah to showcase his world-class abilities.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, arrive with the hope of improving on their past campaigns. The Warriors have never advanced beyond the group stage in their five previous AFCON appearances. Under new coach Mario Marinica, Zimbabwe aim to challenge the Pharaohs. Marinica famously guided Malawi to the round of 16 at AFCON 2021, and he hopes to repeat the feat with a stronger Zimbabwean squad.
