CAF Opens Investigation Into AFCON Quarterfinal Incidents
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stepped in after a series of controversial incidents during the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, launching a formal investigation into conduct deemed unacceptable on and off the pitch.
The conclusion of the AFCON Morocco 2025 quarterfinals brought more controversy than celebration. On Monday, CAF confirmed it had opened a disciplinary investigation after reviewing official match reports and video footage that point to behavior falling short of professional standards in two key fixtures.
The matches under scrutiny are Cameroon vs Morocco and Algeria vs Nigeria, both of which featured moments of extreme tension that escalated into heated exchanges, confrontations, and scenes requiring intervention from match officials and coaching staff.
Incidents That Raised Red Flags
In its official statement, CAF explained that the cases have been referred to its Disciplinary Board, which will analyze the evidence and determine individual responsibility. The governing body stressed that firm action will be taken should any breaches of the code of conduct be confirmed.
One of the most notable incidents occurred after the clash between Algeria and Nigeria, where the Super Eagles advanced to the semifinals with a 2–0 victory, powered by goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. Nigeria’s success kept its hopes of a fourth continental title alive, but the aftermath was far more turbulent for the eliminated Algerian side.
Goalkeeper Luca Zidane became a central figure following the final whistle, engaging in heated exchanges with Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika, as players and staff from both teams attempted to defuse the situation. Those moments are now part of the evidence being reviewed by CAF.
Morocco, Cameroon, and an Unusual Scope
The second quarterfinal under investigation was Morocco’s 2–0 win over Cameroon. As the host nation, the Atlas Lions have been under immense pressure throughout the tournament, creating an intense atmosphere in every match. According to CAF, some post-match conduct—particularly actions directed toward the refereeing team—may have crossed acceptable limits.
An unusual aspect of the investigation is its media-related component. CAF confirmed that it is reviewing footage involving members of the press who allegedly behaved inappropriately in the mixed zone, a rare step in disciplinary proceedings at this level.
In closing, CAF reiterated its zero-tolerance stance toward behavior that undermines the integrity of the competition. The organization emphasized that protecting the image of the Africa Cup of Nations and ensuring respect for referees, organizers, and all participants remains a top priority.
As the tournament moves forward, the fallout from the quarterfinals serves as a clear warning: the outcome of AFCON Morocco 2025 will be shaped not only on the field, but also by decisions made in the disciplinary offices.
