Morocco crowned 2025 AFCON champions

After months of behind-the-scenes disputes, the Moroccan national team managed to prevail and claim the title of African champions, i.e., the 2025 AFCON, which Senegal had won in extra time in the final match. However, this victory was marred by a flurry of controversies that ultimately led to the highest honor in African soccer being awarded today to Brahim Díaz’s national team, which wasted no time in celebrating after learning of the outcome.

The same Real Madrid player who missed a penalty in the final that would have secured victory for his national team was able to celebrate his team's win after the Confederation of African Football decided to strip Senegal of the AFCON title. The Moroccan player was playing the match against Manchester City. That match was won by the City 2-1, with an aggregate score of 5-1.

It was a double victory for the Moroccan international, as he secured a place in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League and won a trophy that his national team, and especially he himself, had missed out on after he missed the penalty. And he celebrated after the match was over

The controversy and the revocation of the title

Senegal had left the field during stoppage time following a penalty awarded to Morocco, which Díaz subsequently missed, allowing Senegal to reach extra time and win the match. Due to Senegal's withdrawal from the field of play, the officials decided to strip them of the title and award it to the Moroccan national team, a decision celebrated by Brahim Díaz.
