Angola and Zimbabwe Share Spoils in Exciting Group B Stalemate
Angola and Zimbabwe settled for a hard-fought draw in Marrakech, with both teams still chasing their first win of AFCON 2025.
First-half goals set the tone in Marrakech
Angola and Zimbabwe played out a 1–1 draw in their Group B clash at the Stade de Marrakech on Friday, a result that leaves both sides still searching for their first victory at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025. It was an intense and evenly contested match in which both defenses were tested, and each team enjoyed moments of control.
The breakthrough arrived midway through the first half when Angola capitalized on a spell of sustained pressure. In the 26th minute, Gelson Dala finished calmly with a right-footed strike into the bottom-left corner after a perfectly weighted through ball from Tó Carneiro split the Zimbabwean back line. The goal rewarded Angola’s proactive approach and ignited celebrations among their supporters.
Zimbabwe respond before the break
Just as Angola looked set to head into halftime with the advantage, Zimbabwe found a crucial response deep into stoppage time. In the 45+6th minute, Knowledge Musona made the most of a swift counterattack, guiding a composed right-footed finish from the right side of the box into the bottom-left corner.
The equalizer was crafted by Bill Antonio, whose assist released Musona into space and allowed the captain to restore parity moments before the interval. The late goal shifted the momentum and ensured both teams returned to the locker room level on the scoreboard.
Angola press, Zimbabwe resist
After the restart, Angola controlled possession and spent long stretches camped in the Zimbabwean half. They created several scoring opportunities and repeatedly tested the opposition defense, but lacked the final touch needed to reclaim the lead.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, remained disciplined and dangerous on the counterattack. Their ability to break quickly nearly paid dividends late on, as they carved out chances that could have stolen all three points. Despite four minutes of added time in the second half, neither side managed to find a decisive goal.
Everything to play for in Group B
The draw leaves both Angola and Zimbabwe still without a win at AFCON 2025. With qualification for the knockout stages still within reach, their progression now depends on strong performances in the remaining group matches. Both teams will look to build on this encouraging display as the race for advancement in Group B intensifies.
