Senegal Looks for Its First Win Under Patrick Vieira

Senegal faces its first road test in the AFCON 2027 Qualifiers with the goal of collecting all three points. The Lions of Teranga will face Ethiopia at Bahir Dar National Stadium after both teams dropped points on the opening matchday.

The match will also be Patrick Vieira's second official game as Senegal head coach. His debut ended in a 1-1 draw against Mozambique, in a match where the Senegalese took the lead through Nicolas Jackson but were unable to hold onto their advantage.

Geny Catamo equalized before halftime, and the score remained unchanged for the rest of the match.

Now, Senegal will have another opportunity to secure the first victory of this new era and avoid losing ground early in a group that began with Sudan at the top.

Senegal Faces the Qualifiers Without Sadio Mané

One of the biggest absences during this international window is Sadio Mané.

The veteran forward was not included by Patrick Vieira in the squad for the matches against Mozambique and Ethiopia due to a physical issue.

The coach left the door open for Mané to return during the next international window, while using these opening matches to begin implementing his ideas and evaluating new options within the squad.

Despite Mané's absence, Senegal still has an experienced group featuring players such as Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Pape Alassane Gueye and Pape Matar Sarr, with Nicolas Jackson among the team's main attacking options.

Ethiopia Looks for Its First Points

Ethiopia began its road to AFCON 2027 with a defeat that came in the closing stages of the match.

The Waliyas held firm for much of their game against Sudan, but Mohamed Eisa struck in the 86th minute to score the only goal and leave the Ethiopians empty-handed in their qualifying opener.

Now, they will have an opportunity to respond in front of their supporters at Bahir Dar National Stadium.

After the opening matchday, Sudan leads Group J with three points. Senegal and Mozambique have one point each, while Ethiopia is still looking for its first point.

The group does not include any of the three AFCON 2027 host nations, meaning the top two teams will qualify directly for the tournament, which will be held in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
