Malawi will host South Sudan on Friday, September 25, at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, in the opening round of the AFCON 2027 Qualifiers.

How Malawi Arrive

Malawi begin their qualifying campaign under head coach Kalisto Pasuwa, who named a 31-man squad for the opening matches against South Sudan and Angola.

The selection includes 19 foreign-based players, with Richard Mbulu, Babatunde Adepoju and Mwisho Mhango among the attacking options available to the Flames.

Pasuwa has also introduced several new faces to the national team setup as Malawi prepare to begin their campaign in front of their home supporters.

South Sudan enter the group stage after eliminating Djibouti in the preliminary round of the AFCON 2027 Qualifiers.

The Bright Stars secured a 4-0 victory in the first leg before suffering a 1-0 defeat in the return fixture, advancing with a 4-1 aggregate win.

Keer Majak played an important role in the opening victory, scoring once and providing two assists.

Having never qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations finals, South Sudan will look to continue their campaign with a positive result in Lilongwe before hosting Egypt on September 29.

A Crucial Opening Match in Group B

Malawi and South Sudan share Group B with Egypt and Angola, making their opening encounter an important opportunity to collect points before facing their other group rivals.

The top two teams in Group B will qualify for AFCON 2027, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

With six qualifying matches scheduled for each team, both nations will be looking to begin their campaigns with a positive result as they pursue a place at the continental tournament.
