Mozambique Thrash Sudan and Remain Unbeaten in AFCON 2027 Qualifying Group J

Mozambique thrashed Sudan 4-1 at the Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto to pick up three crucial points in the race to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Mambas moved to four points after two matches and provisionally climbed toward the top of Group J, which also features Senegal and Ethiopia. In this qualifying phase, the top two teams from each group earn a place in the continental tournament.

WITI OPENS THE SCORING AS CHAMITO STRIKES AFTER HALFTIME

Mozambique took the initiative and opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Witi Quembo received the ball after a combination down the right, took on his defender, beat his marker with a change of direction and fired a shot from just outside the box that beat goalkeeper Mustafa. Guima provided the assist.

The hosts carried their lead into halftime and struck again just after the restart. In the 46th minute, Chamito rose inside the box to head home after another move involving Witi. Guima had driven forward on the outside and delivered a cross toward the penalty spot. The Sudanese goalkeeper got a touch to the ball, but Chamito reacted quickly to the rebound and doubled Mozambique's advantage.

GUIMA AND CHAMITO COMPLETE THE ROUT

Mozambique did not let up. In the 58th minute, Ricardo Guima extended the lead with a long-range strike. The move began with Mathe, who played a role in the buildup before the midfielder unleashed his effort from outside the box.

Four minutes later, Chamito struck again. He received the ball behind the defense, won the race to the ball and calmly finished to complete his brace and make it 4-0.

Sudan pulled one back in the 88th minute through Yasin Hamed, who converted from the penalty spot. The goal did little to change the outcome, as Mozambique closed out a 4-1 victory to move to four points, with five goals scored and two conceded after their opening two matches.

CONTROL OF THE MATCH AND A MAJOR BOOST IN THE QUALIFICATION RACE: With a 4-0 lead, Mozambique managed the game and forced Sudan to chase a late comeback. Yasin Hamed pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 88th minute, but the Mambas secured three points to reach four in Group J, keeping themselves firmly involved in the race for AFCON 2027 qualification alongside Senegal and Ethiopia.
