Cape Verde Fall to Rwanda at Home and Slip Further Away From AFCON 2027 After Two Qualifying Defeats

Cape Verde suffered a painful 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers. Vozinha started in goal and came under scrutiny after an unfortunate play that ultimately decided the match.

CAPE VERDE STRIKE FIRST, BUT RWANDA RESPOND

Cape Verde took the lead in the 39th minute. Gilson Benchimol found space inside the box to finish a cross from the left delivered by Ryen Mendes, putting the Blue Sharks ahead 1-0.

Rwanda responded in first-half stoppage time. In the 45+2nd minute, Claude Niyomugabo collected the ball after a corner and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box that beat Vozinha to make it 1-1.

VOZINHA'S ERROR COMPLETES RWANDA'S COMEBACK

Rwanda delivered the second blow in the 54th minute. Elie Tatou capitalized on an unfortunate decision by Vozinha, who came off his line to deal with a cross into the box. Tatou finished with the goal virtually unguarded to complete Rwanda's comeback and make it 2-1.

Cape Verde pushed for an equalizer during the final stages but could not find the breakthrough. Vozinha even left his goal in one of the final attacks to join his teammates for a corner, but his effort was not enough.

With the 2-1 defeat, the Blue Sharks suffered their second loss in Group K of the 2027 AFCON Qualifiers.

THE EQUALIZER BEFORE HALFTIME: Cape Verde appeared to have the game under control after Gilson Benchimol's opener, but Claude Niyomugabo leveled the score in the 45+2nd minute with a powerful left-footed strike following a corner. The goal changed the momentum heading into halftime.
VOZINHA'S ERROR: Goalkeeper Vozinha was involved in an unfortunate play for Rwanda's second goal. In the 54th minute, Elie Tatou took advantage of the goalkeeper's hesitation as he came off his line to deal with a cross, leaving the goal virtually unguarded.
LACK OF CUTTING EDGE: After falling 2-1 behind, Cape Verde had to take greater risks and pushed for an equalizer, but failed to turn their attacking moves into clear-cut chances. Rwanda held firm during the final stages to preserve the victory.
