The Iraq national team advanced to the intercontinental playoff for the 2026 World Cup after a dramatic finish against United Arab Emirates in Basra.
The Iraq national team secured a historic and nerve-wracking victory by defeating United Arab Emirates 2–1 in the second leg of the AFC playoff for a spot in the 2026 World Cup. The match, played at Basra International Stadium after a 1–1 draw in the first leg, was decided by a penalty in the 107th minute that sent the home crowd into absolute delirium.
United Arab Emirates Strike First and Silence Basra Early
Despite playing away from home, United Arab Emirates showed confidence from the opening minutes. In the 5th minute, Bruno nearly made it 1–0 after a misunderstanding between goalkeeper Jalal Hachim and defender Akam Hashem, but the chance was wasted.
With the Emirati side controlling more of the ball and building patiently, Caio Lucas had a golden opportunity in the 35th minute, but his shot sailed over Hachim’s goal. Early in the second half, Caio Lucas found himself alone once again and finished brilliantly in the 52nd minute to put UAE ahead 1–0. Just a minute later, Marcus Barbosa Meloni came inches away from scoring the second with a powerful strike that hit the post.
