Cristiano Ronaldo and the Heavy Defeats That Still Hurt: From Al Ain’s 4-0 Rout to Barcelona’s Historic 5-0 Win
Cristiano Ronaldo suffered another heavy defeat with Al-Nassr against Al Ain. Here’s a look at CR7’s biggest losses, including the historic 5-0 defeat to Barcelona.
Al-Nassr are back in the spotlight after a defeat that directly affects Cristiano Ronaldo. The Saudi club suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Al Ain in the group stage of the 2026-27 AFC Champions League Elite, in a night when the Portuguese star started the match but was unable to prevent one of the most emphatic defeats of his career in Saudi Arabia.
AL AIN THRASH AL-NASSR 4-0
Al Ain made the most of their home advantage, dominating from start to finish to claim a commanding 4-0 victory over Al-Nassr. Houssine Rahimi opened the scoring in the 25th minute and struck again in the second half. Soufiane Rahimi extended Al Ain's lead in the 72nd minute, before Georgios Giakoumakis completed the rout in the 85th minute.
The key detail for Cristiano Ronaldo is that he played the entire match. The Portuguese forward, alongside stars such as João Félix and Sadio Mané, could not find a way to change the course of a game that ultimately ended with a four-goal margin.
For Al-Nassr, the result also represents one of their heaviest defeats since Ronaldo's arrival in Saudi football. For the Portuguese forward, meanwhile, it adds to an unusual collection of heavy defeats in a career that has otherwise been defined by success and trophies.
AL AIN HAVE AL-NASSR'S NUMBER
The September 15, 2026 defeat was not the first major blow Al Ain have inflicted on Al-Nassr. In the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFC Champions League, the Emirati side also eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo's team.
That tie produced a dramatic conclusion. Al Ain won the first leg 1-0, while Al-Nassr prevailed 4-3 after extra time in the return leg. With the aggregate score tied at 4-4, the winner was decided by a penalty shootout, where Al Ain won 3-1. Ronaldo converted his penalty, but three of his teammates missed theirs.
Two years later, the setback was even more straightforward: Al Ain won 4-0 in 90 minutes, with no need for a penalty shootout. The recent head-to-head record explains why this matchup has become particularly uncomfortable for the Riyadh-based club.
CELTA ALSO THRASHED AL-NASSR — WAS CRISTIANO RONALDO PLAYING?
There is another important precedent involving Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo. On July 17, 2023, just months after Ronaldo joined the Saudi club, Celta Vigo defeated Al-Nassr 5-0 in the Algarve Trophy.
The Spanish club itself recorded the result as a heavy victory over Cristiano Ronaldo's team.
And yes, Cristiano Ronaldo played in the match. The Portuguese star featured in the pre-season friendly, although the five-goal rout was completed in the second half. It was also one of the first heavy defeats Ronaldo suffered with his new Saudi club.
The scoreline was emphatic: Celta Vigo 5-0 Al-Nassr, a five-goal margin that at the time represented one of the biggest setbacks for the ambitious Saudi project built around CR7.
CRISTIANO RONALDO'S HEAVIEST DEFEATS: BARCELONA'S 5-0 WIN
The biggest defeats of Cristiano Ronaldo's career are not limited to his time at Al-Nassr. One of the most painful came on November 29, 2010, when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-0 at Camp Nou.
Ronaldo started the match and played all 90 minutes in a Clásico that was completely dominated by the side managed by Pep Guardiola. Xavi opened the scoring in the ninth minute, Pedro doubled Barcelona's advantage in the 18th, and David Villa scored twice in the second half before Jeffren completed the rout in the 88th minute.
Barcelona's 5-0 victory stands out because it was not a friendly or a pre-season setback. It came in LaLiga, during one of the biggest rivalries in world football, with Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.
Other heavy defeats suffered by Ronaldo's teams include Manchester United's 0-5 loss to Liverpool in 2021 and Manchester United's 4-0 defeat to Brentford in 2022. However, Barcelona's 5-0 win over Real Madrid remains one of the most iconic heavy defeats of CR7's professional career.
With the latest 4-0 defeat to Al Ain, another chapter has now been added to the story. Cristiano Ronaldo has suffered heavy defeats in England, Spain and Saudi Arabia, although few have carried the same symbolic weight as that unforgettable Barcelona 5-0 victory over Real Madrid.
