Why isn't Patrick Vellner competing in the 2025 CrossFit Games?
One of the best in CrossFit decided to step aside, though he’ll surely be keeping an eye on his fellow competitors…
The CrossFit Games 2025 are underway without one of the most dominant athletes, whose absence will undoubtedly be felt in head-to-head competition. Patrick Vellner had already announced his decision not to compete in this year’s edition, and it all stems from the tragic loss of Lazar Đukić during the competition held in Texas.
Patrick Vellner steps aside
The Canadian athlete cited concerns about athlete safety and leadership issues within the company organizing the Games. He also mentioned Lazar Đukić’s passing in the previous edition as a significant factor in his decision.

“It’s Games week, and I may not be there competing this year, but I’m all too familiar with the sights, sounds, and feelings that come with competing at the CrossFit Games.
“For years, I’ve dedicated an enormous amount of time, energy, and passion to the CrossFit Games season, but it’s increasingly hard to justify that commitment. I can’t keep giving my heart to an organization that doesn’t seem to support its athletes.”
The tragic death of Lazar Đukić: a turning point for the CrossFit Games
Patrick Vellner described Lazar Đukić’s death in 2024 as a turning point that exposed critical flaws in the management of the CrossFit Games. According to the Canadian athlete, the leadership’s decisions contributed to the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“Last summer, I lost a friend. Lazar’s death was a tragedy. While several factors were involved, I believe the CrossFit Games leadership team’s decisions had an impact. CrossFit Inc.’s response—or rather, the lack thereof—made one thing very clear: the deep change we need isn’t coming anytime soon,” Vellner stated.
Patrick Vellner’s message before the CrossFit Games 2025
Although Vellner won’t be competing in this edition of the CrossFit Games, he didn’t forget his strong sense of camaraderie and sent a message to the athletes vying for the Fittest on Earth title, as well as to the community that closely follows his every move.
“Good luck to everyone competing this week. Give it your all and be proud of what you’ve achieved. May your peaks be the highest.
“Enjoy every moment for what it is. Relish the highs, face the lows, surprise yourselves. It all goes by too fast.
“Here’s a little fun throwback from my first year as an individual in 2016 (photo 1). Before you know it, you’ll have the wrinkles from photo 2, so make the most of it 😂.”
