The Traumatic Story Behind Max Verstappen’s Father
Jos Verstappen survived one of the most terrifying moments in F1 history. Here's how his experience influenced the development of world champion Max Verstappen.
A moment that marked a life (and a generation)
On July 31, 1994, Jos Verstappen experienced one of the most dramatic moments in Formula 1 history. During a pit stop at the German Grand Prix, a fuel leak caused a fireball that engulfed his car for more than 12 seconds.
“Everything went black and I couldn't breathe” Jos recounted years later. His testimony remains shocking. Despite the intensity of the accident, he managed to escape unharmed, although visibly shaken.
From flames to legacy: the birth of the Verstappen method
Even though Verstappen Sr. didn't make it as a driver, his experience shaped his role as a dad. The trauma of the fire, his disappointment in the sport, and his obsession with perfection made him a demanding mentor for his son Max, who he supported from his early years in karting.
Trucks, European circuits, artisanal mechanics, and constant pressure: Jos designed the path Max should follow, and time seems to have proven him right. Today, his son is a four-time world champion.
A story of indirect redemption
Sometimes, the scars of the past become fuel for the future. Jos's career may have gone up in flames, but from that fire a new mindset was born, one that helped forge one of today's most dominant drivers.
