Team Verstappen Influence on Christian Horner Departure From Red Bull Comes to Light
The departure of Christian Horner as Team Principal and CEO of Red Bull Racing continues to spark controversy in the Formula 1 world. After 20 years at the helm and 14 titles to his name, Horner was relieved of his duties last week. Now, new reports suggest that pressure from Max Verstappen inner circle played a crucial role in his dismissal.
Martin Brundle: “Verstappen’s Influence Was Key”
Former driver and current F1 commentator Martin Brundle stated it’s “obvious” that Max Verstappen and his closest allies had a significant hand in Horner’s downfall. According to Brundle, the pressure from the three-time world champion’s camp was decisive in Red Bull's final decision.
Over two decades, Horner led Red Bull to the top of Formula 1, securing 14 world titles: eight drivers' championships (four with Sebastian Vettel and four with Verstappen) and six constructors’ championships. However, the final 18 months of his tenure were marked by turmoil on and off the track.
Trouble On and Off the Grid
Sportingly, Red Bull had a strong start to the 2024 season, but performance declined as McLaren emerged as the new dominant force. Meanwhile, Horner faced accusations of “inappropriate behavior” from a female employeeallegations he firmly denied. He was eventually cleared after an internal investigation led by an independent KC, but the controversy left its mark.
The situation was reportedly used by internal critics, with Verstappen’s entourage led by his father Jos allegedly applying pressure to push for change in team leadership.
The Champion Will Prevails?
Horner exit appears to be a clear example of the growing power wielded by the “Verstappen camp” within the team. The Dutch driver influence has reached such levels that even major institutional decisions seem to revolve around his satisfaction and continued presence.
Now, with Red Bull without Horner for the first time in two decades, the question is whether these changes will benefit the team or signal the beginning of a turbulent new era. Time will tell if granting their star driver’s wishes was a masterstroke… or a costly mistake.
