Monaco Grand Prix Starting Grid Is Set
There is no doubt that Kimi Antonelli is flying. The young Italian was once again the fastest driver and will start from pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix. Antonelli managed to beat Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton to secure his fourth pole position of the season, further strengthening his championship lead and delivering another statement in the title fight.
Antonelli Takes Control in Qualifying
The qualifying session was full of drama. In Q2, Verstappen appeared to have complete control of the circuit and posted impressive lap times that made him the favorite for pole position. However, when it mattered most, Antonelli once again proved why he is being considered the most in-form driver on the grid.
Charles Leclerc was also determined to shine in front of his home crowd. The Monegasque driver looked ready to challenge for the top spot on the grid, but an incident in the closing minutes prevented him from completing his final flying lap. As a result, he will have to settle for fourth place, just behind Lewis Hamilton, who delivered a strong performance to put his Ferrari third on the grid.
It was not a positive day for George Russell. After a strong start to the season, the Briton has lost some momentum over the past few races and will once again start from sixth position. He also continues to deal with mechanical issues that first emerged at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he was unable to finish the race.
Mercedes Returns to the Front in Monaco
Antonelli’s pole position carries special significance for Mercedes. It marks the first time since 2019 that a driver from the German team has claimed pole in Monaco, a feat achieved on that occasion by Lewis Hamilton. In addition, Antonelli becomes the first Italian driver to secure pole position in the Principality since Jarno Trulli in 2004. Coincidentally, Trulli converted that pole into victory, something Antonelli will be hoping to repeat on Sunday.
The Italian’s start to the season has been nothing short of spectacular. After six races, he has established himself as the driver to beat. His maturity behind the wheel is remarkable considering his age, as he drives with the composure and experience of a veteran who has spent two decades in Formula 1. There is still a long way to go in the championship, but for now, no one seems to have an answer for Antonelli’s pace.
