McLaren Reacts to Intense Norris-Piastri Battle After Hungarian GP Near-Collision
McLaren stood firmly behind the fierce but fair racing duel between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the Hungarian Grand Prix, praising their drivers’ championship fight despite a late near-crash.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, McLaren’s young stars delivered one of the season’s most thrilling finales. Lando Norris, opting for a one-stop strategy, held off a late charge from teammate Oscar Piastri, who was on fresher tires after a two-stop race plan.
The duo battled wheel-to-wheel on the penultimate lap, with Piastri locking up badly at Turn 1 and narrowly avoiding contact with Norris. Despite the heart-stopping moment, McLaren remains confident their drivers raced within agreed boundaries.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella told media that the wheel-to-wheel action was “firm but fair,” highlighting the trust the team places in both drivers to battle hard.
“Lando left some space, knowing Oscar had to brake at the absolute limit. It was within our principles,” Stella explained, reinforcing that the team embraces close racing in its drivers’ championship duel.
Strategy Shift Propels Norris to Victory
McLaren had initially planned identical two-stop strategies for both drivers, believing a one-stop approach would be too risky on the Hungaroring’s demanding circuit.
However, a poor start dropped Norris from third to fifth, undermining the initial race tactic. The team then saw Norris assembling strong lap times on older tires and pivoted to keep him out longer.
This strategic gamble paid dividends. Norris managed to maintain sufficient pace, covering ground while conserving tires, while Piastri’s two-stop method allowed him to pressure Norris late but ultimately fall short. The strategic split amplified the tension and excitement as Piastri fought to close the almost nine-second gap created during Norris’s extended stint.
Championship Battle Tightens Ahead of Break
Norris’s victory narrows Piastri’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship to just nine points as Formula 1 enters its summer break, setting up what seems a two-horse race for the title. The race showcased McLaren’s strength and depth with George Russell securing a podium in third for Mercedes, behind the battling McLaren duo.
The Hungarian GP victory marked Norris’s third win of the season and further cemented McLaren’s resurgence as a major contender.
While Piastri expressed some uncertainty on whether a one-stop could have been possible for him, the intense but respectful rivalry within the McLaren garage signals a healthy competitive dynamic heading into the closing stages of the championship.
The Hungarian GP drama delivered thrilling on-track action, strategic intrigue, and a breathtaking finale that McLaren is eager to foster further—underlining the team’s commitment to allowing their talented drivers to race hard, and fairly, for the championship.
