Harsh Criticism Of Lewis Hamilton’s Legacy In Formula 1: “He Won When There Was Less Competition”
Former F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone did not hold back when evaluating Lewis Hamilton’s career, especially now as the British driver struggles in his first season with Ferrari.
A Rocky Start With Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was expected to be one of the most exciting storylines of the 2025 Formula 1 season. However, things have not gone as planned for the seven-time world champion. For the first time since his rookie year in 2007, he has gone 11 races without a single podium finish — a tough statistic that reflects his current struggles with the Italian team.
Even with his return to Silverstone this weekend, where he’s won a record nine times, expectations are low. Hamilton currently sits sixth in the championship standings with 91 points, well behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who has already managed to reach the podium this season.
Ecclestone Doesn’t Hold Back
Amid this difficult stretch, former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone stirred up debate with a direct critique of Hamilton’s legacy. Speaking to Sky Sports, the 93-year-old was blunt: “Will he win another title? No.”
Ecclestone argued that Hamilton’s success came during a period with less top-level competition. “He was lucky to be there at a time when… first of all, there wasn’t much competition, so it was a bit easier. Now he has real challengers, which he didn’t have back when he was dominating,” he said.
He added that while he still respects Hamilton’s abilities, he doubts his chances with Ferrari: “I hope he can get the job done. But winning a world championship where he is now — that’s a completely different story.”
End Of An Era Or New Beginning?
Ecclestone’s comments have reignited the conversation around Lewis Hamilton’s place in Formula 1 history. After nearly a decade of dominance, the 40-year-old now faces what may be the toughest challenge of his career: proving he can still win under pressure.
While some believe his best days are behind him, others are confident he can bounce back. The Ferrari-Hamilton pairing has yet to find its rhythm, but if anyone knows how to overcome adversity, it’s Lewis Hamilton.
The challenge is clear. He has the titles, the talent, and the legacy. Now, all he needs is for the present to catch up with his past.
