Williams’ Team Principal on Franco Colapinto Ahead of Imola Debut: “He’s in the Right Place”
Franco Colapinto is set to make his highly anticipated Formula 1 race debut with Alpine at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
The young Argentine driver, Franco Colapinto, prepares for his debut this weekend in Imola with Alpine. Williams team principal James Vowles, who played a pivotal role in Colapinto’s development through the Williams academy, has expressed strong confidence in the driver’s potential and the opportunity that lies ahead.
Speaking ahead of the Imola weekend, Vowles emphasized why Alpine represents the best environment for Colapinto’s growth in Formula 1.
“There’s a reason why we were really happy to do a transaction with Alpine, because I really do think it’s his best chance of being in a racing seat either in 2025, or more specifically, 2026,” Vowles said.
This move to Alpine marks a significant milestone for Colapinto, who impressed during his nine-race stint with Williams last season. The five-race contract with Alpine is a critical opportunity for the 22-year-old to showcase his talent and secure a longer-term future in the sport.
Turbulence at Alpine Won’t Deter Support
Alpine is currently navigating a period of internal change, including the recent resignation of team principal Oliver Oakes. Despite this uncertainty, Vowles remains optimistic that the team will continue to fully support both Colapinto and teammate Pierre Gasly.
“Is it a turbulent time? Yes, no doubt about it,” Vowles acknowledged. “Will they support Pierre and Franco? Yes, I think they will as well because they’re still the elite athletes driving for them to score the most points possible.”
Colapinto’s Rapid Adaptation and Raw Speed
Vowles also praised Colapinto’s quick adjustment to the demands of Formula 1 during his time with Williams. The young driver’s ability to get up to speed rapidly and compete at a high level has been a key factor in his rise.
“I’m proud he was part of our academy and that we have a responsibility towards why he’s now on the grid today,” Vowles said. “What you saw with us is he got up to speed very quickly. I know he’s immensely quick, so I think irrespective of whatever deadline they’ve set, he’ll do a good job in that period of time.”
What’s Next for Colapinto?
Colapinto’s debut at Imola will be a defining moment in his Formula 1 career. With Alpine’s support and Vowles’ backing, the young Argentine has the platform to demonstrate his capabilities on one of the sport’s most challenging circuits.
While the team’s internal dynamics remain in flux, the focus will be on Colapinto’s performance and ability to adapt quickly to a new car and team. Success in these next five races could open doors for a more permanent seat in Formula 1, making every lap at Imola and beyond critical.
