Lando Norris Wins in Austria and Closes in on Oscar Piastri in the Formula 1 Title Race
British driver Lando Norris (McLaren) won this Sunday the Austrian Grand Prix, eleventh round of the Formula 1 World Championship 2025, held at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, in the region of Styria. With this victory, he led McLaren fourth “double” so far this season and cut valuable points to his teammate, Oscar Piastri, in the fight for the championship.

Internal duel: Norris vs Piastri
Norris, 25, achieved his seventh victory in Formula 1, the third of the season, after starting from pole position. The Briton crossed the finish line ahead of Australian Oscar Piastri, who despite finishing second, retained the championship lead. The podium was completed by Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), followed by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, at the wheel of the second Ferrari.
Setbacks and progress on the grid
Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Williams) was unable to start due to a technical failure in his FW47 car, which stalled on the grid and began to emit smoke, forcing a delay in the start of the race. His compatriot, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), made a brilliant comeback and finished seventh, climbing four positions after another outstanding performance by the veteran Spaniard.
George Russell (Mercedes) maintained his starting position and finished fifth, while New Zealander Liam Lawson (RB) achieved his best result in the category by finishing sixth, also keeping his starting position.
Youth and experience shine on the track
Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber), in his debut year, finished eighth and scored his first points in Formula 1, after trying until the end to overtake Alonso. On the other hand, Argentine Franco Colapinto (Alpine) finished fifteenth, in a race marked by several incidents.
German Nico Hülkenberg (Kick Sauber) made the comeback of the day, climbing eleven positions to finish ninth. Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Haas) also put in a solid performance, moving up seven places and securing the last available point by crossing the finish line in tenth place.
The fight for the title intensifies
The overall standings remain red-hot. Oscar Piastri will arrive at next weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone as leader with 216 points, closely followed by Norris with 201. Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), reigning champion, remains on 155 points after retiring in Austria due to a collision in the third corner with Italian rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), who also had to retire.
Although McLaren is celebrating a great sporting moment, the tension between its two drivers is increasing. Every point counts in a season where the margin for error is minimal and the battle for the title is more alive than ever.
