Russell wins Canada sprint after dramatic tussle with Antonelli
George Russell was the victor in the first sprint race at the Canadian Grand Prix, but he was made to work for his win by Kimi Antonelli.
George Russell closed the gap to Kimi Antonelli at the top of the drivers' championship after converting his pole position into a win during the Canadian Grand Prix sprint race.
Russell now sits 18 points behind Antonelli after the pair were involved in an early battle for the lead, teeing up qualifying for Sunday's race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve perfectly.
Lando Norris was sandwiched in between the Mercedes duo to take second, with his McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in fourth after a thrilling final lap.
Piastri managed to overtake Lewis Hamilton on lap 23, with the seven-time world champion dropping two places at the end as Charles Leclerc came home in fifth.
It was another disappointing outing for Max Verstappen, who took the chequered flag in seventh as the Racing Bull of Arvid Lindblad closed out the point-scoring positions.
Russell got away well at the front of the grid and stayed ahead, though the McLaren of Piastri fell behind Hamilton on the first lap as the Briton looked to challenge his former team.
But as the Mercedes pair pulled away from the rest of the pack, Antonelli gained on Russell and, on lap six, twice tried to get around his team-mate to get himself out in front.
The Italian was forced off the track twice. The latter incident saw him steam across the grass and allow reigning world champion Norris to take advantage and go into second.
Antonelli was audibly frustrated and had to be calmed down over by race engineer Pete Bonnington and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff as he called for Russell to get a penalty.
The action remained quiet until the final lap, when Antonelli tried his luck on the outside of Norris and left the track once more, with the Mercedes driver giving the position back.
But just behind them, Piastri managed to squeeze himself past Hamilton, who was then overtaken by Ferrari team-mate Leclerc, as he added an extra four points to his tally.
