ONE Friday Fights 162 Results: Benwarwar Roars Back To Knock Out Kongklai, Khunponnoi Authors Masterclass
Just when it looked like the fight was over, it wasn't – and that's exactly the kind of night ONE Friday Fights 162 delivered inside Lumpinee Stadium on Friday, July 17. A back-and-forth war headlined the action in Bangkok, Thailand, punctuating a seven-bout card that had fans on their feet from bell to bell.
A Four-Knockdown Thriller Headlines The Night
Adam "El Capitano" Benwarwar and Kongklai Sor Sommai put on an absolute war in the main event, with the lead changing hands violently multiple times.
Benwarwar opened the bantamweight Muay Thai contest with heavy punches, only to eat a left hook that sent him down to the mat for an eight-count. He roared back before the first stanza ended, opening a cut on Kongklai with a sharp uppercut and left hook.
Kongklai, now sporting a crimson mark, stormed forward with purpose in round two. Just a minute in, he knocked down “El Capitano” again with a short boxing combination. But once Benwarwar returned to his feet, he instantly turned the tide. He immediately unleashed a powerful right cross that sent his Thai rival to the canvas for the first time in the match.
The Sor Sommai product beat the referee’s count, but the Moroccan put the pressure on him with rights and lefts. The Thai tried moving him toward the ropes, but “El Capitano’s” left hook knocked him down yet again. Kongklai returned to his feet once more, but Benwarwar’s crisp boxing caused him to stumble onto the ropes and by that point, the referee had seen enough.
With the second-round TKO, Benwarwar pushed his record to 25-7 and put himself on a two-bout winning streak.
Khunponnoi's Kicks Prove Too Much For Thom
In the co-main event, Khunponnoi Sor Sommai relied on veteran poise and a heavy dose of left kicks to outpoint Scotland's Gregor Thom over three rounds in a flyweight Muay Thai clash.
The 33-year-old Thai set the tone early with sharp combinations before leaning on his kicking game to control range through the middle rounds. Thom was more calculated with his shots, patiently trying to land teeps, crosses, and hooks, but Khunponnoi continued to deflect and find a home for his trademark left kick.
Khunponnoi’s left-sided attacks only intensified in the second frame, forcing his adversary to absorb nearly every blow. The Scottish striker tried to string together some offense with his punches and teeps, but the Thai veteran’s defense was on point.
Thom, ever the competitor, roared back in the third with a spinning elbow and a punishing right hook that had Khunponnoi in trouble late. But the Thai standout weathered the storm, working from the clinch to blunt Thom's momentum and secure a unanimous decision.
The result improved Khunponnoi's record to an eye-popping 128-34, a testament to his lengthy and successful career.
