The problems began during the climb to Mont Louis, near the finish, when a powerful storm hit the area as the riders made their way through the course. What initially began as heavy rain quickly turned into a hailstorm that covered the road in white.
The accumulation of ice made conditions increasingly dangerous for the peloton, particularly in a mountainous area where maintaining control of the bikes became extremely difficult.
Tadej Pogacar Warns of the Danger During the Race
With two riders up the road, Tadej Pogacar was at the front of the chasing group when the intensity of the hail made it nearly impossible to continue racing under normal conditions.
The Slovenian raised his hand to alert the rest of the peloton to the situation and signal that the race needed to be stopped. Shortly afterward, the stage was officially halted as organizers could no longer guarantee safe conditions.
The situation changed rapidly. Riders temporarily left their bikes and began searching for any available shelter from the storm. Some found refuge inside nearby homes, while others took cover beneath roofs and structures along the road.
Organizers Decide to Cancel Stage 3
The initial expectation was to wait and see whether the storm would ease enough for the race to resume. However, the hail continued and the road remained covered by a layer of ice that presented a significant risk to the riders.
Faced with those conditions, La Vuelta a España organizers made the decision to officially cancel Stage 3.
The priority shifted to the safety of the riders, teams and personnel involved in the race. Images from the climb to Mont Louis showed the severity of a storm that completely transformed the conditions on the road within minutes and ultimately forced the cancellation of a stage that had been scheduled to finish in Font Romeu.
