The big prize Isaac del Toro lost after finishing second in the Giro d’Italia
Simon Yates was crowned champion of the 2025 Giro d’Italia after securing the maglia rosa this Sunday on the streets of Rome. His victory not only represents sporting glory but also a hefty financial reward: more than $266,000 for winning the general classification, despite not having won a single stage.

The Giro prizes are awarded by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the organizing company, RCS Sport. Each winner of the 21 stages received over $12,000, and there are additional bonuses for wearing the maglia rosa during the various stages.
Isaac del Toro, runner-up with a bitter financial loss
Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro, who finished second in the general classification, earned a prize of more than $134,000. However, had he won the race, he would have doubled that amount. The third place, occupied by Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, took home around $69,000.
From fourth place onward, the prizes decrease progressively: $21,516; $18,154; $13,588 (for sixth and seventh places); $10,725 (for eighth and ninth); and $7,863 for tenth. From 11th to 20th place, all cyclists received the same amount: $2,863.
Additional prizes: young riders, mountain classification, and teams
Del Toro was also awarded as the best young rider of the Giro, earning an additional bonus of more than $12,000. Meanwhile, Italian Lorenzo Fortunato was the best in the mountain classification and received over $7,000.
In the team competition, the big winner was Visma-Lease a Bike, the squad of Simon Yates and Wout van Aert, which accumulated over $362,000 in prizes. They were followed by UAE Team Emirates with $255,000, and Lidl-Trek with approximately $134,000.
The Tour de France remains the most generous
Despite these figures, the Tour de France continues to be the cycling race that distributes the largest prizes. The winner of the general classification in the “Grande Boucle” receives $570,000, a sum considerably higher than that of the Giro. On the other hand, in the Vuelta a España, the prize for the champion was $170,000 in the last edition, won by Slovenian Primoz Roglic.
