Simon Yates Crowned Giro d’Italia Champion, Exorcising Past Demons
Britain Simon Yates claimed victory at the 2025 Giro d’Italia on Sunday, finally conquering the race that had long eluded him. The win marks the second Grand Tour title of his career, following his triumph at the 2018 Vuelta a España.

Yates, 32, riding for Visma | Lease a Bike, sealed the overall victory with a powerful attack on the gravel climb during Saturday penultimate stage, taking the maglia rosa. He finished the race 3 minutes and 56 seconds ahead of Isaac Del Toro of Mexico, who had worn the leader’s jersey for 10 days. Ecuador Richard Carapaz, the 2019 Giro champion, completed the podium at 4:43 back.
“I’m still in shock about what I’ve achieved. It’s something I’ve been working towards for a long time,” said an emotional Yates after crossing the finish line in Rome.
A Giro Finally Won
Yates had a complicated history with the Giro. In 2018, he led the race for 13 days before faltering late in the third week. In 2020 and 2022, he was forced to abandon due to COVID-19 and a knee injury, respectively. This time, the story was different: he raced with control, chose his moments wisely, and delivered the decisive blow when it mattered most.
The final stage, 143 kilometers through Rome, was largely ceremonial. The peloton passed through the Vatican during the neutral zone and received a symbolic blessing from Pope Leo XIV before entering a circuit of eight laps around the heart of the Eternal City, finishing near the Circus Maximus.
Dutch sprinter Olav Kooij, Yates teammate, claimed the final stage in a fast and technical sprint finish.
Yates Reaches the Peak of His Career
This Giro victory marks the high point of Simon Yates career. Alongside his twin brother Adam Yates, he has been part of the WorldTour elite for over a decade. His previous best result in the Tour de France was a fourth-place finish in 2023, but now he proudly adds the Giro d’Italia champion title to his name.
Del Toro Shines with a Promising Future
Although he couldn’t hold onto the pink jersey, Isaac Del Toro impressed in his second Grand Tour appearance. The 21-year-old Mexican earned the white jersey as the best young rider and showed that he has the potential to be a future champion.
“I’m learning. I should be proud of myself,” Del Toro said, acknowledging tactical errors on the penultimate stage.
Other Classification Winners
- Mads Pedersen (Denmark) took home the ciclamino jersey for the points classification, after winning four stages.
- Lorenzo Fortunato (Italy) claimed the blue jersey as the best climber.
