Isaac Del Toro Wins the Giro of Austria and Consolidates His Position as the New Jewel in the International Cycling CrownI
From promise to reality. After his historic second-place finish at the Giro d’Italia where he also claimed the Best Young Rider classification many wondered whether Isaac del Toro, the rising star from Baja California, Mexico, was a future prospect or just a one-hit wonder. This Sunday, he silenced any doubts by winning the 75th edition of the Tour of Austria, confirming that he is here to stay.
In the fifth and final stage, Del Toro finished 19th, a result that was more than enough to retain his 29-second lead over Ireland’s Archie Ryan, who secured second place. Rafal Majka, Del Toro’s teammate at UAE Team Emirates XRG, completed the podium in third.
First Pro Title for the Mexican Cyclist
Del Toro made his intentions clear from the start. Finishing fifth in stage one, he proved he wasn’t in Austria to just participate. His stage two victory set the tone, but it was his dominant performance in stage four the Queen Stage at Kühtai that truly showcased his potential.
In that penultimate stage, the Mexican finished third heading into the final stretch but managed to out-sprint both Ryan and Majka in the final corner. As a result, he entered the last stage as the leader in the general classification, points classification, and young rider classification. The final stage was won by Bob Jungels of Luxembourg, but it didn’t affect the overall standings.
With this result, Del Toro secures his first professional title outside of the youth categories, and his team, UAE Team Emirates XRG, was crowned the best team of the Tour of Austria, winning four out of five stages.
What’s Next for Isaac del Toro?
After his impressive Giro performance, Del Toro’s team made it clear that he would not race in the Tour de France(currently underway) or the Vuelta a España, scheduled from August 23 to September 14.
However, races such as the Clásica de San Sebastián (August 2) or the Tour of Poland (August 4–10) could be on his calendar, though no official announcements have been made following the Tour of Austria.
In addition to claiming the yellow jersey as overall winner, Del Toro also took home the white jersey as best young rider, the green jersey as points leader, and was recognized as the top stage winner, earning a total prize of $20,000.
The New Face of Mexican Cycling
With this triumph, Isaac del Toro not only validates the hype surrounding his Giro podium but firmly establishes himself as the new face of Mexican cycling. Backed by UAE Team Emirates, he’s quickly becoming one of the most exciting talents in the international peloton and the future looks bright.
