The Nightmare of Isaac del Toro’s Teammate at the Giro d’Italia: “I Can’t See with My Right Eye”
Juan Ayuso, rider for UAE Team Emirates, was forced to withdraw from the 2025 Giro d’Italia after suffering an unexpected bee sting in his right eye during Stage 17. The pain and swelling were so intense that he could no longer continue in the race.
A Tough Giro for the Spanish Cyclist
Luck was not on Ayuso’s side in this edition of the Giro. Since the gravel-heavy stage near Siena, he had been struggling—especially after a crash that required three stitches in his knee. Despite the setback, he claimed an impressive victory in the Tagliacozzo stage and remained competitive in the general classification until Stage 15.
However, during Stage 16, Ayuso lost nearly 15 minutes to the race leader, his own teammate Isaac del Toro, effectively ending his chances of contending for the overall title. Still, the Spanish rider was determined to finish the race.
The Bee Sting That Ended His Giro
Everything changed in Stage 17. A bee got into Ayuso’s helmet and stung him in the right eye. The reaction was immediate, and the swelling made it nearly impossible for him to see. Though he attempted to start Stage 18, he ultimately withdrew due to the pain and impaired vision.
His withdrawal is a major loss for UAE Team Emirates, which will now shift full focus to supporting Isaac del Toro, the current leader of the race. The young Mexican rider is poised to make history in his debut at a Grand Tour.
Ayuso’s story at this year’s Giro will be remembered as one of the most bizarre and unfortunate—derailed by both injury and an insect. Meanwhile, all eyes now turn to Del Toro, who could very well become the next champion of the Giro d’Italia.
