(VIDEO) Canada Continues Its Legacy with Team Silver in Women's Artistic Gymnastics All-Around at the 2026 Commonwealth Games
The silver medal is Canada's 10th in 11 editions of the event, improving on the bronze medal it won at Birmingham 2022.
Canada delivered an impressive performance in the women's artistic gymnastics team competition at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, capturing the silver medal with a total score of 157.300.
The Canadians showcased consistency across all four apparatuses to reach the podium for the second straight day, finishing behind a dominant Australia, which claimed gold with 158.400 points. England rounded out the podium in third with 154.300.
It marks just the second time in history that Canada has earned the silver medal in the event.
Australia, meanwhile, further cemented its dominance by capturing a fifth team title, while Canada and England remain tied with three championships each. England entered the competition as the defending champions but had to settle for bronze after narrowly edging Wales for the final spot on the podium.
Ellie Black and Lia-Monica Fontaine Lead Canada Into the Finals
Canada's squad—Ellie Black, Gabrielle Black, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Redick, and Alyssa Guerrier-Calixte—thrived through a strong team effort highlighted by standout individual performances.
Lia-Monica Fontaine once again showcased her power on the vault, posting the top qualifying score with 13.750, while Ellie Black delivered one of the competition's best routines on the balance beam and advanced to the all-around final as the top qualifier with 53.400 points. Fontaine also secured a place in the all-around final after finishing fifth with 52.050.
Black also qualified second for the uneven bars final with a score of 13.850, and both she and Fontaine advanced to the balance beam final. Lia Redick turned in an impressive floor exercise routine, while Alyssa Guerrier-Calixte and Gabrielle Black contributed crucial scores that helped Canada secure the silver medal.
Australia Sets the Pace While Canada Confirms Its International Credentials
Although Australia led the competition from start to finish behind outstanding performances from Kate McDonald, Breanna Scott, Ruby Evans, Emily Whitehead, Ruby Pass, and Georgia Godwin, Canada answered with depth and consistency, remaining firmly in contention throughout the meet.
Following the competition, Ellie Black celebrated her return to international competition after taking time away from the sport.
"I'm so excited to be back competing. This is my first all-around competition since returning, and I've only recently resumed training on vault and floor. I'm incredibly proud to compete again with this amazing team and to experience the Commonwealth Games once more. I'm having so much fun," said the four-time Olympian.
With the silver medal secured, Canada heads into the all-around and apparatus finals full of confidence, with several of its gymnasts in position to add to the country's medal haul and continue showcasing the strength of Canadian women's artistic gymnastics on the international stage.
