Oleksandr Usyk Wants to Face Jake Paul... But Not in a Boxing Match
The undisputed heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk, is narrowing down his next opponent to three possible contenders, including the controversial influencer turned boxer, Jake Paul. However, there’s an important detail: the Ukrainian does not plan to face him in the boxing ring.
The Unexpected Option of an MMA Fight
With an impressive record that includes wins over stars like Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Daniel Dubois, Usyk is approaching the end of his career and carefully weighing his next moves. According to reports, the three names his team is considering for his next fight are Tyson Fury, Joseph Parker, and Jake Paul.
However, the matchup with Paul wouldn’t be a traditional boxing bout. A member of Usyk’s team, Sergey Lapin, explained in an interview that they are exploring options that are appealing both sport-wise and in terms of audience interest. “Most fighters have called out Jake Paul, but our story is different,” he said.
The plan is to hold the fight inside an MMA octagon, a format that poses a unique challenge for both: Paul has some experience in mixed martial arts, while Usyk would have to adapt quickly. “It could become a massive show with a huge global audience,” Lapin added, noting that negotiations are already underway and the fight could take place early next year.
What About Fury and Parker?
Meanwhile, Tyson Fury has announced his return to boxing after a recent retirement and there’s the possibility of a trilogy fight with Usyk after the Ukrainian won their first two encounters. On the other hand, Joseph Parker is next in line to challenge for the heavyweight world titles, so if Usyk chooses not to face him, he may have to vacate the WBO belt.
In conclusion, Oleksandr Usyk is not only seeking new sporting challenges but also aims to put on a different kind of show by exploring a hybrid fight blending boxing and MMA against high-profile names like Jake Paul. This move could expand his legacy beyond the ring and capture the attention of a much wider audience.
