Julio César Chávez Jr. Transferred to a Maximum-Security Prison in Sonora After Deportation
Julio César Chávez Jr. faces his darkest moment: after more than a month in custody in the U.S., the son of the legend was deported to Mexico and transferred to a maximum-security prison in Sonora. Journalist Carlos Jiménez revealed the details of his admission.
The Transfer to Mexico
After his arrest in Los Angeles and weeks of uncertainty, Julio César Chávez Jr. was deported to Mexico and placed under custody in a federal maximum-security prison in Hermosillo, Sonora. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the arrest stemmed from an active warrant in Mexico linked to organized crime and arms trafficking.
Journalist Carlos Jiménez (@c4jimenez) confirmed that the boxer arrived in the country during the early hours of Tuesday, August 19, and was admitted to CEFERESO 11 by agents of the Mexican Attorney General’s Office.
How the Deportation Happened
According to the National Registry of Detentions, Chávez Jr.’s deportation took place on Monday at 11:53 a.m. through the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Sonora. From there, he was transferred to the facilities of the Federal Ministerial Police in Hermosillo, where he was placed at the disposal of the federal judge who issued his arrest warrant.

The Legend’s Son and His Ties
Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Chávez Jr. never hid his closeness to figures linked to drug trafficking. His father, Julio César Chávez, publicly acknowledged having ties with kingpins such as Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
Moreover, Chávez Jr. is married to Frida Muñoz, who was previously in a relationship with Édgar Guzmán, El Chapo’s son. In 2021, he even admitted having a cordial relationship with Ovidio Guzmán: “I get along very well with Ovidio, but we don’t really see each other. I appreciate him a lot and I don’t want to know anything about the things they say about him,” he said on social media.
