David Benavidez Calls Canelo áLvarez “Scared” and Brags That He Wouldn’t Stand a Chance Against Him
The dream matchup between Canelo Álvarez and David Benavidez remains one of the most anticipated fights in professional boxing, especially in the super middleweight division.
Benavidez, who has been chasing a Canelo Álvarez fight for over three years, has publicly expressed his frustration over the lack of progress. This situation forced the undefeated fighter (30-0, 24 KOs) to leave the super middleweight division last year and pursue new challenges in the light heavyweight division.

Benavidez Now WBC Light Heavyweight Champion
Currently, David Benavidez is the WBC light heavyweight champion and is preparing for his third fight in the division. His first official title defense will be against Anthony Yarde (27-3, 24 KOs) in the main event of “The Ring IV” on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a key boxing event 2025.
Following Canelo Álvarez’s recent loss to Terence Crawford, many boxing fans are wondering if Benavidez might return to 168 pounds to finally face the Mexican superstar.
Benavidez Accuses Canelo Álvarez of Fear
In statements to Inside the Ring, David Benavidez claimed that Canelo Álvarez is scared:
“The way he handled my presence at 168 pounds, he’s definitely scared of me. I was talking so much trash in front of him. Why didn’t he fight me in front of the whole world? But as you saw with Dmitry Bivol, every time he fights a bigger guy with power, he can’t control the bigger fighters like he does the smaller ones. He sees a lot in me that he can’t stop: speed, power, and heart. He has no chance of beating me now.”
Benavidez added:
“He should’ve taken the fight a long time ago. Now I’m at my peak, with total confidence, better technique, and ready to shine in the biggest events. I’m not just a boxer; I’m a warrior. I go in there and destroy everyone.”
Canelo Álvarez Still Open to Fighting Benavidez
During preparations for his bout with Crawford, Canelo Álvarez stated that he has never turned down a fight with David Benavidez and is still willing to face him in the future.
Benavidez responded:
“If Canelo wants to move up, I have the WBC world title at 175 pounds. After I beat Bivol, I’ll have all the belts, and then I’ll be the one with the power. Canelo says he fights for greatness and titles. I’ll collect all the titles, and then we can sit back down at the table to talk.”
