Who Could Coach the New York Knicks Next? Michael Malone, Chris Paul, and Other Candidates
After parting ways with Tom Thibodeau, widely regarded as their most successful coach in over two decades, the New York Knicks now face a challenge of finding a new coach.
With a talented core in place and the pressure to deliver a title mounting, the search for a new head coach is underway for the New York Knicks, and the shortlist is both intriguing and unconventional.
Favorite candidate: Michael Malone
At the top of the Knicks’ list is Michael Malone, the former Denver Nuggets head coach who led his team to an NBA title just two seasons ago.
Malone brings instant credibility, a proven defensive mindset, and, notably, strong ties to the Knicks organization. His father, Brendan Malone, was a longtime Knicks assistant, and Michael himself spent time as a Knicks assistant early in his career.
On paper, Malone seems like an ideal fit: he is methodical, values stability, and has a championship résumé. However, his coaching profile closely mirrors that of Thibodeau—both are defensive-minded, both are known for sticking with set rotations, and both rarely experiment with lineups during the regular season.
Another question mark is whether Malone’s offensive system, which leaned heavily on the unique talents of Nikola Jokic in Denver, can be successfully adapted to a Knicks roster that lacks a similar generational centerpiece.
The ultimate wild card: Chris Paul
Perhaps the most fascinating name linked to the Knicks job is Chris Paul, the 40-year-old point guard currently with the San Antonio Spurs. While Paul has never coached at any level, he is widely respected as one of the smartest and most influential players of his generation.
His leadership as a longtime NBA Players Association president and his reputation as a “coach on the floor” also make him a compelling candidate. Paul’s strong personal relationship with Knicks president Leon Rose—his former agent—only adds fuel to the speculation.
Other possible candidates
Other names reportedly being considered as the next New York Knicks head coach include Mike Budenholzer, a proven regular-season winner with the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks, but questions linger about his playoff adaptability. Jeff Van Gundy, a beloved former Knicks coach who recently impressed as a Los Angeles Clippers assistant.
Additionally, the retired Villanova legend, Jay Wright, has strong connections to Knicks stars Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart. However, luring him out of retirement could be a challenge. Johnnie Bryant, a promising Cavaliers assistant renowned for building strong player relationships has also impressed the Knicks but lacks head coaching experience.
Lastly, Dan Hurley, the UConn Huskies’ college coach, known for his tactical acumen and success in developing ball movement and rebounding could also be considered.
With the Eastern Conference more competitive than ever and the Knicks’ window to contend wide open, this coaching decision could define the franchise’s trajectory for years to come.
