Wembanyama Escapes Major NBA Punishment
The Spurs superstar came dangerously close to receiving another flagrant foul point after a controversial play involving Jalen Brunson, but the NBA chose not to penalize him further.
Victor Wembanyama has avoided a potentially massive setback for both himself and the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. The incident occurred during Game 3, when Wembanyama appeared to swing his arm dangerously close to the head of Jalen Brunson. Officials did not call a foul on the play, but the sequence quickly became one of the most discussed moments of the game.
Following the contest, the NBA reviewed the incident to determine whether additional disciplinary action was warranted. The review carried significant importance because Wembanyama already had two flagrant foul points accumulated during the postseason.
According to league rules, reaching four points results in an automatic suspension. A further penalty would have moved the Spurs star much closer to that threshold at a critical stage of the Finals. The French center previously received two points after being assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected during the Western Conference semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves for an elbow on Naz Reid.
In the end, the league decided not to issue an additional flagrant foul. However, NBA vice president of referee development and training Monty McCutchen acknowledged that the play should have been called a foul during the game.
The ruling allows Wembanyama to enter Game 4 without the immediate threat of suspension, providing a major boost for San Antonio as the Spurs attempt to level the Finals against a Knicks team that continues to hold the upper hand in the series.
