Washington Wizards Win the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery and Eye a New Era
The Washington Wizards secured the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and now hold the key to one of basketball’s most talented young generations.
Luck finally went the way of the Washington Wizards. The franchise won the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery held Sunday in Chicago and will officially select first overall on June 23 in Brooklyn, giving the organization a massive opportunity to reshape its future.
Entering the lottery with a 14% chance at the top pick, the Wizards emerged victorious in a draft class loaded with elite prospects such as AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Caleb Wilson, and Cameron Boozer, the son of former NBA star Carlos Boozer.
Washington remains deep in a rebuilding process, and this selection could become the centerpiece of the franchise’s long-term project.
A Draft Class Full of Star Power
The 2026 NBA Draft has generated major excitement because of the quality at the top of the class. Forward AJ Dybantsa from BYU is considered one of the leading candidates to go first overall thanks to his athleticism, scoring ability, and two-way potential.
Other standout names include Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, along with highly regarded forwards Caleb Wilson from North Carolina and Cameron Boozer from Duke, who continues building his own reputation after his father’s successful NBA career.
This year’s lottery took place at Navy Pier in downtown Chicago, just one day before the beginning of the NBA Combine, where top prospects perform workouts, physical testing, and interviews in front of scouts and executives from around the league.
Memphis and Chicago Also Celebrate
Several other franchises also came away pleased with the results. The Utah Jazz landed the second overall pick, while the Memphis Grizzlies, home of Spanish forward Santi Aldama, secured the third selection.
The Chicago Bulls became one of the biggest surprises of the night after jumping into the fourth spot despite entering the lottery with only a 4.5% chance.
The Los Angeles Clippers received the fifth pick, followed by the Brooklyn Nets led by Spanish coach Jordi Fernández.
Further down the board, reigning NBA champions Oklahoma City Thunder were awarded the 12th pick in a draft that will once again take place over two days in Brooklyn.
Among the international players who officially declared for the draft are Spanish prospects Aday Mara, fresh off winning the NCAA title with Michigan, as well as Sergio de Larrea and Baba Miller, all hoping to take the next step toward the NBA.
