Stephen Curry Opens Up About Retirement: “Two Years at a Time”
Steph Curry is embracing the uncertainty of his basketball future, telling reporters this week that he’s taking his career “two years at a time” as he enters the final stretch of his contract with the Golden State Warriors.
Speaking at the American Century Championship golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, the four-time NBA champion made it clear that he has no set timeline for retirement, instead choosing to focus on the present and the two seasons remaining on his deal.
“I don’t know. I’m just taking it two years at a time. That’s what I have left on my contract right now,” Curry said when asked about his long-term plans.
Curry’s current contract, which includes a one-year, $62.6 million extension signed last summer, keeps him with the Warriors through the 2026–27 season. By the time it expires, Curry will be 39 years old, and he admits even he doesn’t know what will come next.
“I hope to be in a situation where, physically, I have the choice and it’s not made for me, so I’m doing everything I can to stay limber, stay active, and do what I do at a high level,” Curry explained.
Warriors’ Window and Curry’s Legacy
The Warriors’ front office has structured its roster around Curry’s contract window, assembling a veteran core including Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green in hopes of one last championship push. Curry remains the face of the franchise and, at 37, is still among the league’s most productive players.
Last season, he averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 assists, and 4.4 three-pointers per game across 70 appearances, earning second-team All-NBA honors. However, Golden State’s playoff run was cut short after Curry suffered a hamstring injury, raising questions about how much longer the Warriors’ title window will remain open.
Curry’s father, Dell Curry, recently told reporters that the decision on when to retire will be entirely up to Steph, noting his son’s unique skill set and ability to adapt his game as he ages.
“He could be well into his 40s because he can shoot the ball and requires that you have to guard him. That’ll create space for other players on the floor, so I think that decision will be totally up to him,” Dell Curry said.
No Rush to the Finish Line
Despite the growing conversation about his eventual retirement, Curry’s focus remains on competing at the highest level and chasing a fifth NBA title. He has made it clear that he wants the decision to step away to be his own, determined by his physical condition and passion for the game rather than external pressures.
For now, Warriors fans can expect at least two more seasons of Curry’s brilliance, as the NBA’s greatest shooter continues to define his own timeline—one contract, and one championship chase, at a time.
