Oklahoma City Thunder's Nikola Topic Gets Diagnosed With Cancer
- Nikola Topic, the promising young guard for the Thunder, has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and has begun chemotherapy treatment.
The Oklahoma City Thunder announced that Nikola Topic, their 20-year-old Serbian guard and 12th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, is undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Topic had a biopsy procedure earlier this month at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, which confirmed the diagnosis.
General manager Sam Presti shared that the medical team is "extremely positive" about Topic’s long-term outlook. The team emphasized that Topic preferred to keep the diagnosis private until he began treatment, highlighting his focus on health above all else.
Player’s Current Status and Team Support

Despite the diagnosis, Topic has maintained his workout routine and has shown resilience throughout the process. However, no timeline has been set for his return to the court, as his health remains the top priority.
Presti assured that the Thunder’s sole expectation is for Topic to focus fully on his recovery, with the full support and encouragement of the organization. The management and coaching staff have expressed unwavering confidence in the medical care Topic is receiving and are optimistic about his eventual comeback.
Background and Future Outlook
Topic missed the entire 2024-25 NBA season recovering from a torn ACL sustained prior to the draft. He made his summer league debut and appeared in preseason games, showing promising potential as a key contributor to the Thunder’s roster following their championship-winning campaign last season.
While the cancer diagnosis is a significant challenge, testicular cancer is recognized as one of the most treatable cancers, especially when detected early and supported by proper medical care.
The Thunder and their fans remain hopeful for Topic’s successful treatment and eventual return to professional basketball.
