Despite the injury, Williams was a key contributor last season, averaging a career-best 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. He revealed he received pain-relief injections before each playoff game and had to relearn parts of his shooting technique while managing the injury.

Following the initial surgery, a second procedure was performed in late October to remove a troublesome screw, delaying his return slightly but not dampening his determination.​
