Jonathan Kuminga: high upside, seeking a breakout

Jonathan Kuminga, the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is a restricted free agent this summer. Despite his immense potential, Kuminga has yet to fully break out with the Warriors, starting only 10 games during the 2024-25 season and averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 24.3 minutes per game. 

The Warriors are open to bringing Kuminga back but are reportedly willing to discuss sign-and-trade scenarios, knowing that several teams—including Miami—are expected to pursue him aggressively. The Heat believe they can offer Kuminga a larger role and a fresh start, potentially unlocking the next phase of his development.

Miami’s offseason strategy

The Heat’s pursuit of Kuminga comes after a season in which they finished 37-45 and missed out on their top targets in the trade market, including Durant.

Team president Pat Riley remains active, with Miami possessing valuable assets for potential trades, such as forward Andrew Wiggins—acquired in the Jimmy Butler deal—and a mix of young players and draft picks. Kuminga fits the Heat’s profile as a versatile, high-upside forward who could thrive in Erik Spoelstra’s system.
