Luka Doncic Receives a Painful Message from the Lakers: He’s No Longer Indispensable
The Los Angeles Lakers once again proved they can win without Luka Doncic, thanks to standout performances from Deandre Ayton, Rui Hachimura, and the surprising emergence of Nick Smith Jr., sending a direct message about the Slovenian star’s role on the team.
Even with injuries and lineup adjustments shaping the early season, the Los Angeles Lakers delivered a clear statement: they can shine without their newest superstar, Luka Doncic. Their latest evidence came in a convincing 123-115 victory over the surprising Portland Trail Blazers, a win that strengthened their strong start in the Western Conference with a 6-2 record under head coach JJ Redick.
Ayton and Hachimura Lead the Charge
With the former Real Madrid star sidelined for rest after his return from injury, and Austin Reaves also unavailable due to a groin issue, other players stepped up. Deandre Ayton dominated the paint with 29 points and 10 rebounds, delivering an ultra-efficient performance by making 14 of his 19 field-goal attempts.
Alongside him, Rui Hachimura continued to prove his value as a versatile scoring threat, finishing with 28 points. For the Trail Blazers, Deni Avdija led the way with 33 points, while Shaedon Sharpe and Jerami Grant contributed offensively, but not enough to match the Lakers’ punch.
Nick Smith Jr. Steals the Spotlight
However, the story of the night came off the bench. Young guard Nick Smith Jr. erupted for 25 points and knocked down 5 of 6 from three-point range, including two clutch shots in the final minutes to seal the game. The 21-year-old, who signed a two-way contract after being waived by the Charlotte Hornets, is suddenly forcing his way into a permanent role in the rotation.
This victory marked the third time this season that the Lakers have won a game without Doncic, fueling debate about his impact and fit since the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis out of Los Angeles.
A Message for Luka?
The Lakers showcased resilience, depth and a strong collective spirit to take control in the final stretch. Even though Luka Doncic remains the centerpiece of the team’s long-term plan, performances like this raise the inevitable question: can Los Angeles win without relying on him?
The real challenge will come once the Slovenian playmaker returns and the rotation is complete. But for now, the message from the court appears as clear as it is uncomfortable: in Los Angeles, no one is untouchable.
