Lakers Sign Deandre Ayton: Former No. 1 Pick Joins L.A. Frontcourt on Two-Year Deal
The Los Angeles Lakers have secured a significant addition to their frontcourt, agreeing to terms with veteran center Deandre Ayton on a two-year contract.
The deal, which includes a player option for the second season, comes after Ayton reached a buyout agreement with the Portland Trail Blazers, making him one of the most sought-after big men on the free agent market this offseason.
Ayton, 26, was due $35.6 million from Portland for the 2025-26 season but agreed to a $10 million pay cut to facilitate his release and join a contender. The Lakers will pay Ayton $8.1 million using the remainder of their non-taxpayer mid-level exception, while Portland will cover the rest.
The Bahamian center attracted interest from several playoff teams, including the Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, L.A. Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Denver Nuggets. Ultimately, Ayton chose the Lakers, drawn by the opportunity to compete for a championship and play alongside stars Luka Dončić and LeBron James.
Both Ayton and Dončić are represented by agent Bill Duffy, and sources close to the Lakers say Dončić played a key role in recruiting Ayton to Los Angeles.
Frontcourt Upgrade and Strategic Fit
Ayton is expected to step immediately into the Lakers’ starting center role, addressing a glaring need after the team’s early playoff exit and the departure of several veteran big men. Last season with Portland, Ayton averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 56.6% from the field.
The Lakers had previously targeted other centers, including Brook Lopez and Clint Capela, but ultimately landed Ayton, who brings a blend of youth, athleticism, and playoff experience. His ability to run the floor, finish in the pick-and-roll, and protect the paint should complement the playmaking of Dončić and the versatility of LeBron James.
Championship Aspirations and Next Steps
The addition of Ayton signals the Lakers’ intent to retool and make a deeper playoff run in the 2025-26 season. After a disappointing first-round exit last year, the front office prioritized adding size, rebounding, and interior defense.
Ayton, a former No. 1 overall pick and NBA Finals participant with the Suns in 2021, brings valuable postseason experience to a Lakers squad aiming for another title in the LeBron era.
With Ayton now in the fold, the Lakers are expected to continue tweaking the roster, seeking additional shooting and perimeter defense to round out the rotation. For Ayton, the move represents a fresh start and a chance to prove himself on one of the NBA’s biggest stages.
For the Lakers, it’s a strategic bet on talent and fit as they look to maximize their championship window with Dončić and James leading the way.
