During his official presentation, the NBA superstar admitted that the Argentina captain represents the type of career and legacy he hopes to build in professional sports.
"I hope my career can be like Messi's"
Antetokounmpo attended the FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinal between Argentina and England at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where Messi was named Player of the Match.
One day later, the former NBA champion spoke about his admiration for the Argentine legend.
"Watching Messi definitely inspires me. I hope I'll be able to do something similar in my career."

The 2021 NBA champion described watching Messi live as a remarkable experience.
"We witnessed something huge."
According to Giannis, Messi belongs alongside the greatest athletes in history.
"He's up there with Michael Jordan, Novak Djokovic, Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. When you watch athletes like that, you're inspired."
Respect has to be earned
One moment stood out to Antetokounmpo during the semifinal.
After Messi was knocked to the ground, several Argentina teammates immediately rushed over to help him back to his feet.
For Giannis, that reaction reflected true leadership.
"You have to earn that. The respect he gets from his teammates is something you earn."
He added that this is exactly the kind of legacy he hopes to leave.
"That's the role model. LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi."
The two global superstars will now share the same city, with Antetokounmpo joining the Miami Heat while Messi is set to return to Inter Miami after facing Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final.
