Now a key player for the Indiana Pacers, Pascal Siakam’s rise has inspired countless fans worldwide.  Born on April 2, 1994, in Douala, Cameroon, Pascal Siakam’s early life was deeply rooted in faith and tradition.

At just 11 years old, Siakam enrolled in a Catholic seminary, following his father’s wish for him to become a priest. For several years, his days were filled with religious studies, prayers, and discipline.

However, Siakam’s heart was elsewhere. Growing up, he was an avid soccer fan, idolizing Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o. His brothers, who played basketball at the collegiate level in the United States, introduced him to the sport that would eventually change his life.

The turning point: embracing basketball

Siakam’s transition from seminary student to basketball hopeful was gradual but decisive. He credits former NBA player and fellow Cameroonian Luc Mbah a Moute for inspiring him to pursue basketball seriously. 

Starting basketball relatively late compared to many peers, Siakam’s athleticism and work ethic stood out. He participated in the Basketball Without Borders camp, a program designed to develop young international talent, which opened doors for him to attend New Mexico State University in the United States.

At New Mexico State, Siakam quickly adapted to the college game, improving his skills and basketball IQ. By his senior year, he was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2016, showcasing his scoring, rebounding, and defensive abilities.

His impressive college career caught the attention of NBA scouts, leading to his selection as the 27th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors.

NBA breakthrough: from G League to NBA Champion

Siakam’s early NBA career involved time in the G League with Raptors 905, where he earned Finals MVP honors in 2017. But the 2018-19 NBA season was Siakam’s breakout year.

He won the NBA Most Improved Player award and played a crucial role in the Raptors’ first-ever NBA championship. His 32-point performance in Game 1 of the NBA Finals and clutch plays throughout the series were instrumental in defeating the Golden State Warriors.

In January 2024, Siakam was traded to the Indiana Pacers, ushering in a new phase of his career. Known for his versatility as a forward, Siakam brings scoring, defense, and leadership to the Pacers.
