Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Breaks Yet Another Record in First Two Games of the NBA Finals
Oklahoma City Thunder star and MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is making an immediate and historic impact in his first NBA Finals appearance.
In just two games against the Indiana Pacers, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has already rewritten the record books, surpassing a milestone previously held by one of basketball’s all-time greats: Allen Iverson.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring explosion has been nothing short of spectacular. After dropping 38 points in Game 1, despite the Thunder’s narrow loss, he followed up with a 34-point, eight-assist, five-rebound, and four-steal performance in Game 2. That effort helped Oklahoma City even the series with a commanding 123–107 win at home.
With 72 total points through his first two NBA Finals games, Gilgeous-Alexander now holds the record for most points scored by any player in their first two Finals appearances. This feat surpasses the previous mark of 71 points set by Allen Iverson during the 2001 NBA Finals with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Iverson’s legendary 48-point debut remains the highest-scoring Finals debut ever, but Gilgeous-Alexander’s combined output over two games has set a new benchmark for consistency and scoring prowess on the biggest stage.
Rising to the occasion
Gilgeous-Alexander’s record-breaking start is a testament to his growth as a player and his ability to perform under pressure.
Entering the 2024-25 season, he was already recognized as one of the league’s premier talents, having earned MVP honors after averaging a career-high 32.7 points per game. His smooth scoring ability, combined with his elite ball-handling and playmaking skills, has made him the focal point of the Thunder’s offense.
Throughout the playoffs, Gilgeous-Alexander has continued to elevate his game, averaging over 30 points per contest while also contributing across the board with rebounds and assists.
Impact on the Thunder’s championship quest
The Thunder’s journey to the NBA Finals has been fueled by Gilgeous-Alexander’s emergence as a bona fide superstar. His scoring outbursts and ability to take over games have given Oklahoma City a legitimate chance to win their first championship since relocating from Seattle in 2008.
In Game 2, Gilgeous-Alexander’s all-around excellence was on full display. Beyond his scoring, he orchestrated the offense with precision, setting up teammates and creating opportunities.
His defensive hustle, highlighted by four steals, energized the team and helped stifle the Pacers’ offense. This complete performance underscored why he is considered one of the most dynamic players in the league today.
