NBA Insider Reveals LeBron James’ Plan with the Lakers
LeBron James appears set to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025-26 NBA season, according to multiple reports.
ESPN insider Shams Charania revealed that LeBron James is likely to exercise his $52.6 million player option, which would keep him in Los Angeles for a 23rd NBA season. The deadline for James to officially opt in is June 29, giving him several weeks to finalize his decision, but all indications point toward a return.
“I’m told LeBron James is likely to opt in. He’s got a massive player option and that’s the plan,” Charania said, emphasizing that while nothing is set in stone, the expectation is that LeBron will be back in purple and gold.
LeBron’s 23rd NBA season
If LeBron opts in, the 2025-26 season will mark his 23rd season in the NBA, setting a record for the most seasons played in league history. Already the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, James continues to defy age and expectations. This past season, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and one steal over 70 games.
LeBron’s remarkable durability and production at age 40 have only fueled speculation about how much longer he can play at an elite level.
LeBron wants a contender
While LeBron’s return seems likely, it comes with conditions. Charania and other NBA insiders report that James is seeking assurances from Lakers management about improving the roster. After a 50-32 regular season, the Lakers were bounced in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, falling short of championship expectations.
LeBron, who will turn 41 during the 2025-26 campaign, is reportedly pushing for “hard conversations” with the Lakers’ front office. He wants to ensure the team is built to compete for another title, especially after a blockbuster trade in February that brought Luka Doncic to Los Angeles and sent Anthony Davis to Dallas.
The Lakers’ supporting cast and depth remain concerns, and James is expected to be vocal about the need for further upgrades.
